If an employer fired me for a background check done after a year of employment, can I win a lawsuit?

My boss called me today and fired me because they did a background check on me. I have been working for them for a year already and employment was supposed to be subject to a background check and credit check. However, a year later, they fired me. Can I sue them and win?
Here’s the catch, they hired me as contract labor and had me fill out the tax form stating so when they hired me.
